Dr. P. MATHIALAGAN who was honoured with United Nations FAO Fellowship has over 37 years 6 months’ experience in Teaching, Research, and Extension and 29 years’ experience in Administration. He has addressed in UN Global Platform 2019 as a scientist delicate from India and served as member in the Commonwealth – Multinational Research Project Scientist team.

He was instrumental in the introduction of PG Diploma Course in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PGDRA), TANUVAS Web TV, ‘Kaalnadi Kathir’, ‘Kaalnadai Velanmai’ Farm Magazines, ‘Ilanthendral’ student magazine and Winners Club to coach civil service aspirant students. He has designed FOUR courses.

His contribution towards institutional development includes successful establishment of 21 new units in the University. It includes 2 new divisions i.e. a Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU); two new research stations i.e. Pulikulam and Kangeyam cattle research stations., 7 Model Units., 9 Labs and Museums and a Resource Centre for indigenous chicken. Also established four new colleges.

His research innovations include development of Nine new Technologies viz., AIM Block, DFTD Kit, Software for least cost feed formulation for cows, Low cost Incubator, User-friendly Goat Expert System, PAMACHA, Researchable problems identification methodology, Dairy farmers participatory empowerment model, three – Animal disaster management models and two Psychological scales to measure the efficiency of SHGs and rural women empowerment. He has also patented/commercialised TWO technologies.

As an ardent researcher he has guided 20 research scholars (6 Ph.D; 5 M.V.Sc., 7 PG Diploma and others). He was instrumental in signing FIVE MoUs between TANUVAS and other Organizations.

Being a prolific author, he has widely contributed to scholarly communication at International and national level by publishing more than 150 research papers and abstracts and 110 books, 19 Lessons and Book Chapters, 73 Pamphlets and Folders, 221 Non-Projected teaching aids, 13 Digital audio-lessons; 19 Educational Films, More than 500 Popular Articles and 5 music albums (32 Farming Songs). The farming songs were telecast by Chennai, Trichy and Coimbatore All India Radio stations for more than 1500 days. He is also contributing his editorial skills by serving as a Member in the Editorial Board of 3 International Scientific Journals, 2 magazines and 12 scholarly publications. Presently serving as the Founder editor of the Animal Agriculture (kaalnadai velanmai) monthly and also the chief editor of the International Journal of Development Extension.

He has handled 27 externally funded rural development research projects as PI and Co-PI and instrumental in the creation of 75 infrastructural facilities at a total cost of Rs.52.75 crores in the University.

His contribution towards skill development is vital as he has organized 34 Skill Development Programmes for the benefit of stakeholders in which 14 are International level programmes and 20 are National level programmes. He has organized 5 Farm radio schools, 90 animal husbandry educational and veterinary health campaigns, 27 livestock show, 26 exhibitions and delivered 115 Radio talks for mass communication of AH technologies.

He was invited by various national agencies like ICAR, ASRB, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), NDRF, CICT, WSPA and State level agencies like TNPSC, TNLDA, Aavin, TNCRDB, WDA and State Government Departments like Agriculture, Education, Social Welfare, Police, Tamil Development etc., as an Expert Member.
He had implemented rural development programmes like IRDP, ITDP, DPAP, TRYSEM, DWCRA, IHC, SAP, SGSY in 6 districts of Tamilnadu for the economic empowerment and lively hood security of the rural people.

Being an Academician with proven leadership quality, he has served as the Organizer, Co-organiser, Member and Expert for 133 training programmes for the benefit of stakeholders. He has also served as Chairman, Advisor, Expert and Member of over 130 Committees (8 National; 14 State level; 108 university level).

He has served as a Member and Leader in 23 professional bodies and 11 socio-cultural bodies including Vice-President of Research Association for Gender in Agriculture and EC Member of Indian Veterinary Extension Forum. Also served as Chairman / Member in National Level (7), State Level (15), University Level (93) Important Committees.

His stupendous achievements as an outstanding academician, ardent researcher and eminent Extension specialist brought him 37 Awards including UN-FAO Fellowship and UWA Fellowship (4 International; 8 National; 4 State level including ‘Kalai Maamani”; 4 University; 5 Other awards and 12 Prizes).

He has visited many foreign countries on academic and research assignments viz., Australia, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Kenya, Dubai, Malaysia , Singapore, Switzerland(Geneva), France, and UK.

Dr.P.Mathialagan who started his career as a Veterinary Assistant Surgeon in the Department of Animal Husbandry of Government of Tamil Nadu, after 10 years of rural services, joined as Assistant Professor at TANUVAS. Due to his sheer meritorious services in TANUVAS for more than 27 years, he rose to the position of the Registrar of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in 2016.
